Ozempic® and dry mouth

A sticky, dry mouth is easy to put down to a new medicine, but for someone with type 2 diabetes it has several other explanations worth checking first. This page sets out what the Ozempic® documents say (nothing directly), what drug-safety reports and a small case series describe for semaglutide, and how to tell ordinary dryness from dehydration or high blood sugar.

What the Ozempic® documents contain

A full-text search of the US prescribing information, the EU product information and the Canadian monograph finds no mention of dry mouth, xerostomia or reduced saliva as a side effect. The listed effects closest to it are those that lead to fluid loss.

What reports and case studies describe

A 2025 study searched the US FDA Adverse Event Reporting System for ear, nose and throat effects of five GLP-1 medicines. Semaglutide showed statistically significant reporting signals for dry mouth, altered taste, loss of smell and Bell’s palsy [4]. Reporting signals show that a problem is reported more often than expected relative to other drugs; they cannot show that semaglutide caused it or how often it happens.

A 2023 case series described three women, aged 27 to 46, who developed severe mouth dryness after a mean of about 11 weeks on semaglutide for weight loss, with saliva testing confirming low flow once other causes had been excluded [5]. Management varied, from stopping the medicine to symptom care or a prescription saliva stimulant, and all regained acceptable saliva flow. Three patients cannot establish how common this is, and they were not using semaglutide for diabetes.

A 2026 narrative review of semaglutide and oral health concluded that dry mouth is the most consistently reported oral effect, though rates vary widely between studies, and that it often seems to follow nausea, eating and drinking less, and slowed stomach emptying [6].

How semaglutide might leave your mouth dry

What the label supports: nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are among the most frequent Ozempic® side effects, and the label warns they can lead to dehydration [1]. MedlinePlus lists a dry or sticky mouth among signs of mild to moderate dehydration, and notes that people with diabetes are at higher risk of becoming dehydrated [9].

What is proposed but unproven: drinking less because appetite and thirst feel lower, or a direct effect on salivary glands. The review and case series raise these possibilities, but no controlled study has measured saliva in people taking Ozempic® [5][6].

Diabetes in its own right: NIDCR and MedlinePlus both list diabetes as a cause of dry mouth [7][8]. MedlinePlus lists feeling thirsty among symptoms of high blood sugar, which can be hard to tell apart from a dry mouth [10].

Other common causes

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) and MedlinePlus describe these [7][8]:

  • Hundreds of medicines, for example some for high blood pressure, depression and bladder control.
  • Sjögren’s disease, HIV and other salivary gland disorders.
  • Radiation to the head or neck, chemotherapy and nerve damage.
  • Breathing through your mouth, especially at night.
  • Alcohol, tobacco and other substances.

Self-care NIDCR describes

NIDCR suggests drinking water regularly and sipping water or a sugar-free drink with meals, which also makes chewing, swallowing and tasting easier [7]. It suggests cutting back on caffeinated drinks, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, chewing sugar-free gum or sucking sugar-free sweets to stimulate saliva, being aware that spicy or salty foods may sting, and using a humidifier at night [7].

Because dry mouth raises the risk of tooth decay and mouth infections, NIDCR stresses good oral care at home and regular dental check-ups [7]. If you choose sweets or gum, sugar-free versions matter more than usual when you also manage blood sugar. Your dentist or doctor can suggest saliva substitutes if self-care is not enough [7].

Ozempic® points to raise with your prescriber

The US label asks prescribers to warn patients about dehydration from stomach side effects, to advise them to avoid fluid loss, and to monitor kidney function when such reactions occur, particularly as treatment starts and doses rise [1]. If your mouth feels dry, mention whether you have had nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea, how much you have been drinking, your recent glucose readings and any new blood pressure or mood medicines. NIDCR notes that when a medicine is to blame, a clinician may change it or its dose, which is a decision for them rather than for you alone [7].

Questions

Does Ozempic® cause dry mouth?

It is not listed in the US, EU or Canadian product information [1][2][3]. FDA adverse-event reports show a significant dry-mouth signal for semaglutide, and a small case series described reduced saliva, but neither can prove cause [4][5].

Is my dry mouth a sign of dehydration?

It can be. MedlinePlus lists a dry or sticky mouth, thirst, dark urine and passing little urine among signs of mild to moderate dehydration [9], and the Ozempic® label warns that stomach side effects can cause fluid loss [1].

Could it be my diabetes rather than Ozempic®?

Possibly. NIDCR lists diabetes as a cause of dry mouth, and MedlinePlus lists thirst as a sign of high blood sugar [7][10]. Your glucose readings help separate the two.

Does dry mouth on semaglutide go away?

The three women in the case series all regained acceptable saliva flow with different management approaches [5]. No Ozempic® document reports how long dry mouth lasts.

Can dry mouth damage my teeth?

NIDCR says dry mouth raises the risk of tooth decay and mouth infections, and recommends good home care and regular dental check-ups [7]. Tell your dentist you are taking Ozempic®.

Is sugar-free gum all right on Ozempic®?

The Ozempic® label does not mention gum. NIDCR suggests sugar-free gum or sweets to stimulate saliva [7]. If gum makes you burp or feel bloated, note that too.
