BMI is a screening measure for adults aged 20 and over. It does not measure body fat or health directly; muscle, age, sex and ethnicity all change what it means. Not a diagnosis.

The formula this calculator uses

  1. Units

lb × 0.45359237 = kg · ft × 30.48 + in × 2.54 = cm. Imperial entries are converted first, so 703 × lb ÷ in² is not used directly; it gives practically the same result.

  2. BMI

BMI = kg ÷ (cm ÷ 100)², shown rounded to one decimal.

  3. Category

    under 18.5 · 18.5 to under 25 · 25 to under 30 · 30 to under 35 · 35 to under 40 · 40 or more [1].

  4. Weight range at your height

18.5 × m² to 25 × m², shown in the weight unit you chose.

What this calculator does not do

  • It does not measure body fat, muscle or where fat is stored.
  • It does not diagnose any condition or decide whether a medication suits you.
  • It does not work for children and teens, whose BMI is read differently.
  • It does not set a goal weight; the range line is arithmetic at your height.

About this estimate and your privacy

BMI is the same formula for everyone; the CDC uses the same adult cutoffs regardless of age, sex or race and asks that it be read alongside other health information [1].

Everything is worked out by a script inside this page. The script makes no network requests, the page’s security policy (Content-Security-Policy with default-src none and no connect-src) would block them anyway, and nothing you type is stored, not even in your browser’s storage. Questions

Is BMI accurate for muscular people?

BMI is worked out from weight and height only, so it cannot tell muscle from fat. That is why the CDC describes it as a screening measure to consider alongside other health factors [1].

Does BMI work for children?

Not with these categories, which are for adults aged 20 and over [1]. This calculator does not do children’s BMI.

Are the cutoffs different for men, women or older adults?

No. The CDC uses the same adult cutoffs regardless of age, sex or race [1]. What a given BMI means for one person can still differ, which is why it is only a screening measure.

Why does my GLP-1 prescriber ask about BMI?

The labels of weight-management medications describe their use in adults with obesity, or with overweight and at least one weight-related condition [2][3], and their clinical trials enrolled people by BMI, for example a BMI of 27 or more with type 2 diabetes [2][3]. Whether a medication suits you is your prescriber’s call.

Is a BMI category a diagnosis?

No. The CDC calls BMI a screening measure that should be considered with other health factors [1].

How does the imperial calculation work?

Pounds are converted to kilograms and feet and inches to centimetres, then the metric formula is applied. The classic 703 × lb ÷ in² shortcut gives practically the same number.

What does the weight range line mean?

It is 18.5 × height² to 25 × height², the weights that would give a BMI in the CDC’s healthy-weight band at your height [1]. It is arithmetic, not a goal.

Can PepLabo track my weight?

Yes. You can log weigh-ins in PepLabo, set a goal weight and see the trend as a line next to your doses.
